I went to a senior high school where has over 100 years of tradition in Hiroshima. My school life was terrible, and sometimes I think I should have gotten to other schools. There are many strict rules and teachers act as if they are hard-hearted sergeants.
I remember a particularly day where a teacher asked me and I replied as “hai (はい meaning is Yes)” after class finished. Hai is one of politically replys that widely used in Japanese society. But that teacher got angry and shouted at me “What the hell did you say! Say it more louder!” I guess he thought I replied stately which made him go mad.
Other memorable moments in one of my school life was about Bukatsu(部活). During senior high school, I was a member of the golf team. Two teachers in the team. The one was middle aged and fat, another one is younger and wearing glasses. The middle aged one was always shouting at us and putting out by trifles. He always said “More politely!(but I think many people never say he is polite) ” “Man up(in Japanese 男を磨く he often said this word but I did not what it meant even now. )” One day, it rained in Hiroshima and was darn heavy! A heavy rain and flood warning were issued. The student had to go back to home earlier than usual. My house was in faraway from school so I got back to home as fast as possible. A few days ago, middle aged one said to me that we need to talk and then why didn’t you go to meeting? He looked so mad. I thought the meeting was canceled because of heavy rain and every student had to leave school and said so. Unbelievably, the meeting was not canceled and he thought I cut it and mess with him. I explained warnings were issued and I didn’t mean to rude. But he shouted at me “I have NEVER met a student like you! You are fired!” I thought myself that I have never met a person like you too, and from now. This is merely one example.
Another unforgettable time was Jouge kankei(上下関係). One sempai was always bullying kohai include me, looked like little middle aged one. I was especially bullied and most of my memories were of being insulted(he was saying to me teinou(低能 low-intelligence), heta(下手, people who suck at something)),his fist constantly aimed at my body, and if I did a miss shot he would say to me “You suck! You are keeping every member behind!” I admit I was not good at golfing but should every low handy capper do act like this? Is it good thing to insult duffer?
This is a personally experience and I’m not telling what Japanese schools like, of course. However, some teacher too strict and scold students. Some sempai treat their kohai like slaves. Jouge kankei, sempai, kohai, strict teachers are not necessarily good things.
